Young-Laine Courts Facility

Isle of Wight
Isle of Wight County, Virginia

The Young-Laine Courts Facility houses Isle of Wight County’s circuit court, circuit court clerk’s office, general district court and clerk’s office, and juvenile and domestic relations court and clerk’s office. Its three courtrooms are equipped with state-of-the-art recording and video arraignment capabilities. Additionally, the courthouse includes the sheriff’s court security functions and offices of the commonwealth’s attorney, victim-witness program, juvenile probation, Court Appointed Special Advocate, and VSTOP, a program for prevention of violence against women. The design vocabulary recalls traditional Virginia Tidewater courthouses including the county’s own historic 18th century courthouse, which still stands in the former county seat of Smithfield. The building features three functioning cupolas that each draw daylight deep into the interior.

Certified as LEED Silver, the design includes high performance features that reduce energy and water use.
