Kersey Creek Elementary School
Hanover County Public Schools, Mechanicsville, Virginia
The two-story Kersey Creek Elementary School is designed to serve 900 students in a very compact floor plan. The building is sited to preserve an outdoor open space equal to the building footprint. The looped hallways provide an efficient circulation pattern, making effective use of the small footprint. The design utilizes multiple sustainable design principles while meeting the school system’s need for a and economical prototype design. This high performance facility was certified by the U.S. Green Building Council as a LEED Silver building. Many strategies selected as part of the LEED process are integrated into the school’s curriculum, allowing the design elements of the building to be used as teaching tools in a cross-curriculum manner. Notable sustainable design features include preserved open space, full cut-off site lighting, and water-efficient fixtures. The design offers an environment that provides opportunities to students to learn about energy savings and become more aware of environmental issues.
