Sutherland Elementary School

Dinwiddie County Public Schools, Dinwiddie, Virginia

The design concept of Sutherland Elementary School resulted from the collective vision of the school facilities committee that included teachers, students, administrative support staff, and community representatives. The new school took historic clues from the original Dinwiddie Elementary School building, providing a visual link to the community’s past while introducing more contemporary details that clearly reflect the path of educational facilities in Dinwiddie. Traditional red brick and stone pilaster detailing was used to tie the new elementary school to the community’s favorite elementary school, and other design elements soften the scale of the building. The school site was master planned in coordination with county recreation facilities, ball fields, and other future Dinwiddie County facilities.
