Baltimore, Maryland

The SEED Foundation was given the vacated Southwest High School building and its 52-acre grounds for the development of the public board­ing school. The east wing has been renovated into classrooms, a dining room with a commercial kitchen, administration and recreation spaces for the school of 400 middle and high school students. The new student entrance, main gathering spaces, dining hall, and library face a central outdoor green. The head of the school’s office is in a new tower facing the green, marking the entry to the building and providing an iconic feature for the school.

Visible from the surrounding community, the tower is lit at night serving as a symbolic beacon of the school’s presence in the community. An internal central atrium connects three levels of group activities: gymnasium, library, and auditorium. This skylight core function as the town center where students and faculty gather.
