Butner Federal Correctional Institution

Federal Bureau of Prisons
Butner, North Carolina

The Butner Federal Correctional Institution II Medium Security Facility was designed with its sixteen buildings positioned in a campus plan arrangement. The facility contains 864 cells that house approximately 1,150 inmates. Each general housing building consists of 256 cells, while the special housing building consists of 96 cells.

When the need for this new federal correctional facility arose, the Federal Bureau of Prisons decided to focus on improving building performance and minimizing environmental impact. As a result, Butner FCI-II became the first federal prison project to earn LEED certification through the use of green building design principles.
