The new health and wellness center began with an advanced planning study for the recreational and athletic facilities in the Cannon Athletic Complex, which included a feasibility study for the complex and financial feasibility study for a potential new aquatics facility to include a 50-meter pool. The study concluded that the primary needs for the campus were health, wellness, and athletic components, delaying the aquatics component until the second phase.

The first phase of the project included the demolition of Sanders-Sikes Gymnasium, construction of the health and wellness center, and an athletic addition to the Cannon Complex. The McGee Center provides new recreational space, including two free-play gyms, multi-activity court, indoor running/jogging track, exercise and aerobic rooms, weight room, racquetball courts, locker rooms, classrooms, and administrative offices. The athletic addition provides a game day training room, coaches offices, and a new athletic administration office suite.
