Moseley Architects of Baltimore (previously Marks Thomas) designed the first LEED Gold project in Baltimore City, their own office space. The firm redesigned the historic Mangels-Herold building, former home to the makers of King Syrup, at 1414 Key Highway into 12,000 square feet of industrial loft office space, capturing views of Baltimore’s waterfront. The once dark industrial space is infused with light by replacing glass blocks with large storefront windows and using translucent panels as interior walls for day lighting. The open floor plan is made flexible with pivoting conference room walls and open team meeting spaces. The use of bamboo flooring and wall finishes and recycled carpet tiles allows the sustainable renovation to become a prominent design feature. With the revitalization of 1414 Key Highway, the once barren industrial boulevard has become a gateway to Baltimore for many people who travel through the harbor tunnel.
