The Northwest School of the Arts is Charlotte–Mecklenburg Schools only secondary magnet program concentrating on the arts. The school has grown through additions and renovations over the years since the 1950s. Prior to being an arts magnet school, it served as a traditional 9-12 high school. As the school converted to a K-8 arts magnet school, several components required improvements to serve this robust and successful arts program. The project includes significant renovations to the science labs in the heart of the campus; however, the major thrust of the project was to improve the theatrical facilities. The original auditorium was dated and lacked the theatrical space and technology to support the curriculum. This project involved demolition of the existing stage and replacement with a new, larger, technology rich stage with a full fly-loft system.
