The Sullivan’s Island Elementary School replacement facility was completed in 2014 on an oceanfront parcel. Positioned behind two historic gun emplacements, the school is a partial magnet accommodating 500 students in Kindergarten through fifth grade. Numerous site factors resulted in a design featuring an elevated structure of four linked segments, which are sensitively scaled to respect nearby residences. The segments connect the grade levels to the large multipurpose and dining spaces as well as to administrative support functions. A vertical design element at the school’s main entrance provides a focal point to the articulated design, which also includes extensive decks, covered porches, and roof features sympathetic to the character of barrier island location.
