Johnston County Detention Center

Johnston County
Smithfield, North Carolina

Johnston County is one of North Carolina’s fastest growing counties. With its growth came an increase in emergency call volume and the need for additional law enforcement and emergency management spaces. The county’s sheriff’s office, 911 center, and emergency management had outgrown their spaces in the county’s historic courthouse. Moseley Architects was commissioned to design this new public safety center, allowing law enforcement and emergency services to expand and centralize. The relocation also freed up space in the crowded courthouse.

The new facility establishes a central location for all public safety services. The two-story, 54,000-square-foot building houses areas for the sheriff’s department, criminal investigation division, patrol, narcotics, and fire and emergency services. Emergency management and E-911 occupy the entire second floor. Evidence storage and processing are located in an adjacent one-story, 9,400-square-foot pre-engineered metal building. Additionally, a protected employee parking area is provided.

The new public safety center is located on the same campus as the county’s new detention center, which was also designed by Moseley Architects. Johnston County residents will benefit from having a justice campus where the sheriff’s staff are located adjacent to the new detention center and can provide immediate response times to in the event of an emergency.
