This new youth development center provides a pathway forward for reintegration of troubled youth into the Charleston County community, raising the standard of care being met in youth detention. The design of the project seeks to de-institutionalize the facility by integrating carpeting and lounge furniture in living units and substituting standard steel detention equipment and furniture with softer options. The facility includes six juvenile housing units, classrooms, outdoor recreation, arrival and intake, visitation, medical, and administration spaces. It shares some of the neighboring Charleston County Detention Center’s spaces, including the kitchen and laundry room.
