Moseley Architects, in partnership with Stewart-Cooper-Newell Architects, is a proud winner of the Fire Chief 13th annual Station Style Fire Station Design Awards. The firm won a Gold award in the category of “Renovated Fire Stations” for their design and renovation of Henrico Station 13 in Henrico, Virginia.
The renovation to Fire Station 13 was in collaboration with county and fire department staff in order to develop a building program detailing space and functional requirements of the facility. Primary goals for the project were the addition of one apparatus bay and more sleeping space for staff. The station was required to remain operational throughout the construction process.
The implemented concept provides for a building addition containing three new apparatus bays. The two existing apparatus bays were then renovated to house additional sleeping, locker, shower/toilet and support space. Relocating the two existing apparatus bays to the building addition facilitated construction phasing and continuous operation of the station during construction, and also provided for the best functional adjacencies.
The Fire Chief awards program surveys and recognizes fire departments and public-safety facilities from architectural and engineering firms nationwide. This year, electronic portfolios were submitted by 51 participants and reviewed by a panel of six judges consisting of architects and fire personnel. Facilities were judged among ten categories, including career stations, combination fire stations, renovated fire stations, volunteer stations, satellite stations, shared facilities and training facilities.
According to firechief.com, “This year among the trends discussed by the judges were the need for kitchen hood systems in fire stations, the location of emergency generators, levels of ADA adherence and the ever critical use of apparatus bay exhaust evacuation systems. The return of hose drying towers that also facilitate as training towers was seen in the northeast part of the country.”
Fire Chief is currently featuring all entries in their November issue.
