Fort Mill School District
Fort Mill, South Carolina

Serving South Carolina’s fastest-growing district, the high-tech Nation Ford High School uniquely reflects Fort Mill’s identity. Design inspiration sparked from meetings with school officials, and the town’s textile mill origins. Architects were challenged to join heritage and resources with curriculum vision. Today’s two-story facility of brick, glass and metal responds to these qualities in an efficient and functional way.

The dynamic entry feature welcomes students and visitors alike into the “gateway” corridor which serves as the organizing element for circulation through the school. The central commons area is open and inviting. It provides a familiar environment that encourages student interaction and collaboration.

The wing arrangement allows for a traditional organization and separation of the classroom areas from the after-hours spaces like the gym, 900 seat auditorium, and commons/café. It also accommodates future building expansion opportunities. The building takes advantage of natural light through the use of well placed windows and clerestories. Along with increased daylight, 78 Smart Boards and a technology-based media center support student performance.
