Atlantis Apartments

Fairstead
Virginia Beach, Virginia

The Atlantis Apartments were originally built in 1970 and span almost 12 acres in the historic Seatack neighborhood, roughly 10 blocks from Virginia Beach’s oceanfront. Fairstead acquired the property in 2021 with a mission to revitalize the community by investing both in the buildings and in the wellbeing of its more than 600 residents.

Utilizing four percent low-income house tax credit (LIHTC) funding, Moseley Architects renovated 20, two-story residential buildings. Each of the 208 units received new kitchens, bathrooms, and flooring. Rehabilitation efforts focused on modernizing building systems to improve air-quality and regulate temperature, updating interior finishes, and replacing roofs. New soundproof windows block noise from Oceana Naval Air Station’s aircraft.

The community’s basketball courts and playgrounds were updated to cultivate physical and social development skills. These spaces also offer areas for residents to connect and interact, which furthers a sense of community that benefits mental health and wellness.

Additional features include a community garden, a fitness center, and a computer room, which relieve stress, promote healthier lifestyles, and foster opportunities for learning.
