Highland Springs High School’s design was based on a previous Moseley Architects prototype that was originally used in 2007 for Glen Allen High School, which is also located in Henrico County.

To improve the learning environments from the original layout and support current pedagogy, the design team included numerous 21st century learning spaces without altering the footprint of the building. The school’s four educational wings include classrooms, specialty labs for engineering, science, and culinary arts, a teaching center, and informal collaboration areas. These areas are adjacent to learning spaces that are surrounded by sliding glass walls. This feature benefits specific lessons that may require more space, focus on team-based projects, or aid concentration on individualized learning.

The school’s showcase space is the two-story media center, which is punctuated by the grand learning stair that serves as an interstate and gathering space between the first and second levels. A small cafe is tucked beneath the stair for coffee breaks or study sessions.

The project earned LEED Gold certification in 2023.
