A thoughtful update to a prototype design and a carefully choreographed phased construction plan moved Tucker Tigers out of a mid-century school and into the 21st century. John Randolph (JR) Tucker High School was built on the football field next to the original, 1960s-era facility, which remained in use during construction. Once open, the new fieldhouse and stadium supplanted the old high school and kicked off a new chapter for student athletes.

Collaborative spaces on both levels foster customizable learning and resemble informal meeting areas prevalent on a college campus. A plethora of courtyards, which are accessible from the two-story media center and cafeteria, create outdoor learning opportunities and present a change of pace for socializing and eating. The learning stair, which leads up from the media center to the second floor, serves as an impromptu meeting area for clubs and organizations and permits students to move through the center of the building without using one of the traditional staircases.

At the main entrance, space for the county’s English as a Second Language Welcome Center was designed to warmly greet new residents of the county. The center features areas where new residents can meet with interpreters, educational specialists, and teacher liaisons to receive specialized support and services.

The project earned LEED Gold certification in 2023.
