New Kent County Public Schools
Quinton, Virginia

New Kent County Public Schools (NKCPS) faced a pressing need for a new elementary school due to county growth and overcrowded existing schools. The collaborative design process harnessed the collective input of community members and stakeholders.

Two-story academic wings feature extended learning spaces adjacent to classrooms, allowing flexibility for traditional lecture-style instruction as well as group-based activities. A dedicated STEAM lab on the second floor facilitates project-based learning, complemented by a large extended learning area. The social stair serves as a gathering space, presentation platform, and transportation hub connecting the media center and STEAM lab.

Outdoor learning spaces, including a courtyard with an outdoor classroom and second-floor terraces, enrich the learning experience. These spaces encourage collaborative studying and design activities, seamlessly integrating with indoor learning.

Deviating from traditional elementary school designs, the facility has a gymnasium as large as those in most middle schools. This unconventional choice serves the community’s needs, allowing the parks and recreations department to host summer programs within the building’s public spaces.

The public school system in a neighboring county liked the design so much that they will be adapting it for the replacement of two schools within their district.
