Chelsea Thomas Receives Community Architect Award

At their annual meeting on December 8, 2023, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Baltimore chapter honored Chelsea Thomas, AIA, a senior associate in Moseley Architects’ multifamily housing sector, with the President’s Award for Community Architect. This accolade recognizes an architect who has made significant contributions to the community through thoughtful and sustainable design, as well as dedicated public service.

Chelsea has spent over a decade designing spaces that not only resonate with Baltimore residents but also encourage social progress. She has been instrumental in spearheading projects that address critical issues such as affordable housing, environmentally responsible design, and accessible public spaces.

The award was presented by AIA Baltimore President Martina Reilly, also a senior associate in Moseley Architect’s multifamily housing sector.

“Chelsea has been an exemplary embodiment of what it means to be a community architect. Ten years ago, she introduced a little idea called Doors Open Baltimore, which has grown into one of our biggest events of the year. This program introduces visitors to amazing places and spaces in our city, most of which are seldom open to the public. It is an excellent demonstration of how one person can make a real difference in a community.”

Martina Reilly, 2023 AIA Baltimore President

Chelsea’s career accomplishments over the past decade reflect her deep passion for socially conscious architecture. Since joining Moseley Architects in 2013, she has contributed to the design of more than 2,000 units of affordable and mixed-income housing throughout Baltimore and the southeast.

In 2014, she partnered with the Baltimore Architecture Foundation to found Doors Open Baltimore, an annual citywide festival that encourages the exploration of local architecture through open houses, guided tours and scavenger hunts. The annual event draws thousands of residents and visitors to explore the city’s landmarks free of charge.

In 2022, the Baltimore Architecture Foundation (BAF) named Chelsea the recipient of the Roger D. Redden Award for her lifelong dedication to architecture and to furthering its understanding in Baltimore.

Chelsea is the third person at Moseley Architects to have received this award in the last 10 years. Past recipients include Tom Liebel in 2013 and Martina Reilly in 2014.
